A Tribute To Grandmaster B S Huan

B S Huan

Upon my return from Thailand with a 2nd Degree Black Belt in 1978, I was introduced to Grandmaster BS Huan at his dojang in Serangoon, Singapore. That was the beginning of my Traditional Taekwon-Do Journey with the Grandmaster.

GM Huan had trained by and with some of the greatest Korean TKD Masters, including the Great Grandmaster General Choi Hong Hi, the Father of Taekwondo and Founder of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF).

GM Huan’s immense knowledge and skill of TKD became renowned locally as well as internationally resulting in thousands of students joining his organization. He was fearfully (and affectionately) known as “Tiger Huan” because of his sparring prowess, but in him, he was friendly, kind and generous to everyone. A man of good heart and was an advocate of non-violence.

When many in Singapore were contented with just learning TKD at that time, GM Huan had the vision to pioneer, build and establish a strong Taekwondo organization in Singapore in the 70s, hence he founded the Singapore Taekwon-do Academy (STA). Like all great Masters of martial arts, GM Huan’s name was etched in the memory of martial artists in Singapore during his era and in those that came to know him. He is irreplaceable and we can only carry on his legacy.

With his passing on 28 March 2012, I have lost a long-time friend, coach, mentor and grandmaster. Rest in peace GM Huan, the Father of Traditional Taekwon-Do in Singapore and Founder of STA.
